Apple’s iOS mobile operating system has been transforming the way the world does business for the past half-decade, and the release of the iPad only helped to accelerate that process. With the iPad, Apple made a bold move into professional environments like nursing, where nurses can use applications to assess diseases, view x-ray images, and do a number of other tasks that would otherwise have taken them hours to complete. The nursing field has been largely transformed by the iPad and iPhone, with at least ten key applications that make the profession easier, more convenient, and more effective for patients.

Nurses looking to change the way they serve their patients and approach their career should look no further than the ten applications highlighted below. With everything from disease maps to imaging services, these applications are the best ones for nurses of all kinds.

10. Lexi-Comp

Most nurses know about the Lexi-Comp databases that help to diagnose diseases and address problems with a series of case studies, images, and maps. Those databases are now available at the touch of a fingertip with the company’s applications for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. The application is fully compatible with the iPad, giving it a two-column view that improves usability over the application’s interface on smaller devices.

The Lexi-Comp application for iOS devices is available from the Apple App Store for free. The company behind the Lexi-Comp app also maintains a number of other great, nursing-related apps.

Download Lexi-Comp Here

9. STD Meister

This application, developed by MeisterMED, is one of the best tools for nurses who are frequently in contact with patients who have contracted sexually transmitted diseases. The app has been developed to be fully compatible with the iPad, and scales down nicely for those nurses using an iPod touch or their iPhone throughout the day. The Apple App Store offers the application for a mere $3.99, making it an affordable way to make the workday easier.

With the built-in tools and controls featured in STD Meister, nurses have access to pictures and medical effects of more than 300 sexually transmitted diseases. For those nurses serving in this field, that’s a great resource that just can’t be found elsewhere as conveniently.

Download STD Meister Here

8. Davis’s Drug Guide for Nurses

Prescribing prescription medications for patients is one of the most serious tasks that any nurse undertakes, and it requires a serious amount of knowledge and research before making a decision about any drug. That used to require a pretty thick manual of drugs, interactions, and side effects, but that is no longer the case. Developed by the Davis Company, which is a well-known resource for nurses both via print and electronically, Davis’s Drug Guide for Nurses features 200 common medications that can be easily researched.

Drug interactions, side effects, and best uses, are all featured in the drug guide application, which is compatible with both the iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the larger iPad. Nurses will appreciate the two-pane, search-friendly approach to medication research offered by the app, as well as the $38.99 price tag.

Download Davis’s Drug Guide for Nurses Here

7. eFilm

Nurses who work in medical imaging are undoubtedly in good shape, because this particular area of interest within the profession often requires running between different labs, imaging rooms, and patient waiting rooms. This can be pretty taxing on even the most fit nurses, however, and luckily it’s becoming a thing of the past. The eFilm app serves as the 21st century approach to medical imaging, giving doctors and nurses a way to electronically transmit patient images to each other over a mobile or wireless network.

Merge Healthcare develops the application, and it’s offered to medical professionals for free. It’s compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. The application especially shines on the iPad, with large and vivid images that go beyond their film counterparts.

Download eFilm Here

6. 5-Minute Consult

The 5-Minute Consult application is developed by Unbound Medicine, Incorporated. Most nurses will recognize that name as the provider of the “Consult” subscription service that gives them access to more than 900 diseases and a number of other disorders at the click of a mouse. To meet the growing demand for mobile services, the company’s 5-Minute Consult application was developed to be compatible with the iPad, as well as Apple’s smaller handheld devices. The application is free, though a subscription to the company’s actual service is required in order to use it.

Download 5-Minute Consult Here

5. Blausen Human Atlas

The Blausen Human Atlas is one of the best tools for nurses who need a quick way to access every part of the human anatomy. Though every nursing program requires students to memorize virtually every aspect of the human body prior to graduation and certification, the Blausen Human Atlas provides a great reference for moments when that information just can’t be recalled very easily.

Best of all, the company behind the application charges a mere $19.99 for the app. With all of its rich imagery of bones, muscles, and tissues, that’s actually a steal for everyone in the medical field.

Download Blausen Human Atlas Here

4. Osirix

While eFilm might earn a lot of praises from medical imaging nurses, it isn’t the only game in town for modern day medical imaging services in today’s hospitals. In fact, it faces pretty stiff competition from the Osirix app that is available for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad owners. The application takes medical imaging to the next level, offering what the developer describes as “2D, 3D, and 4D imaging” that can be transmitted between iOS devices over a mobile network or Wi-Fi.

For those in the nursing profession who are looking for the next major development in medical imaging, Osirix is likely the answer. Its rich experience on iOS devices makes it an essential tool in today’s hospitals.

Download Osirix Here

3. Mediquations Medical Calculator

For nursing students, or those who need to do calculations on the job but have long since forgotten the formulas, the Mediquations Medical Calculator application is an invaluable resource. IT was actually developed by a fourth-year medical student, and it offers the kind of academic approach that only a student could give it. The application is available for all major iOS devices, and has hundreds of calculations for nurses and other medical professionals.

Download Mediquations Medical Calculator Here

2. Pocket Medicine

Developed by the nursing department at Massachusetts General Hospital, the Pocket Medicine application costs $48.99 and is available for all iOS devices. The application covers everything from diseases and disorders to nursing specialties, the latest research in the profession, and a whole host of other topics. It’s easy a pocket-sized version of the entire nursing profession, making it a great companion for new and experienced nurses.

Download Pocket Medicine Here

1. Medscape Mobile

Mediscape Mobile is essentially an identical application to the Pocket Medicine app listed above, but it comes with one great feature that its competitor does not: The absence of a price tag. Instead, Mediscape Mobile is free and offers information about thousands of drugs, diseases, disorders, and specialties. The price is right for virtually every nurse with an iOS device.

Download Medscape Mobile Here

Great Applications are Transforming Nursing

These ten applications, and the thousands of others that barely missed the cut, are taking nursing to the next level. With pocket-sized disease manuals, medication guides, and more, nurses will find it easy to do their job with a little less back-and-forth running through the hospital’s corridors. And, with next-generation imaging apps, patient care can be taken to an entirely new level that surpasses anything they’re used to.

One thing the schools on this list have in common is their commitment to a quality education. Each university is driven by the desire to provide the best training to nurses available on the market and to do so at reasonable price. These schools are the best of the best, and graduates of these nursing programs will have their choice of job as well as a sky high salary ceiling. Any prospective nursing student would be well served to investigate these nursing program options.

How The Schools are Ranked

To compile this list, each school’s academic program was carefully considered. The quality of the curriculum, the teaching staff and the size of each class were compared to figure out the best program. Once the nursing programs were looked at, the cost of tuition was factored in. Although there are cheaper nursing program options out there, these universities all offer a great education at the best value.

10. Oregon Health and Science University

Situated in beautiful Portland, the Oregon Health and Science University is one of the leading schools on the west coast for nursing. Combining hands-on practice with in-class lectures, this college is always on the cutting edge of new teaching techniques and modern technology. Attending this university is fairly cost effective and should only set the student back $7,000 to $14,000 each year.

9. University of Pennsylvania

As one of the best nursing schools in the country, the University of Pennsylvania regularly out ranks comparable schools because of its exceptional value. This university offers new students program options in nursing administration, gerontology, psychology, mental health, pediatric and family health. Students can choose to become certified as a nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist.

This unique school has some of the best researchers in the world. Professors at the University of Pennsylvania regularly rank higher than other researchers at federally funded schools. With all of the modern technology and education styles, the University of Pennsylvania offers a surprisingly fair price. Tuition and fees at this university total $43, 738 for the 2012-2013 school year.

The University of Pennsylvania has set up a state-of-the-art simulation lab that is outfitted with responsive mannequins in an effort to provide the most realistic experience possible. This school also has partnerships with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. When students are working on their practicum or starting an internship, they may attend one of the partner hospitals and gain the experience they need.

Located in beautiful Seattle, Washington, the University of Washington has a long tradition of excellence in the field of medicine. As a public university, this college also carries a reasonable price for new students. In-state students can expect to pay $19,000 in tuition in fees while out-of-state students will have to pay $32,000.

3. Duke University

This university is ranked seventh by the U.S. News & World Report. Among other things, Duke University is known for its Institute for Educational Excellence and Center for Nursing Discovery. At Johns Hopkins University, students can expect to shell out about $66, 193 for the 2012-2013 school year. This price represents just the cost of tuition. If students want to live on campus, they will still have to pay for their own room and board as well as miscellaneous expenses. The university also expects that tuition costs will rise roughly 3 percent each year.

1. Yale University

Although known primarily for its law school, Yale University actually has an exceptional nursing program. The nursing school at Yale began in 1923. Yale was unique among universities because it strove to prepare nurses in an educational manner instead of in an apprenticeship.

From world-leading research by Virginia Henderson to innovative clinical trials, Yale University is always one step ahead of the crowd. With such a strong focus on excellence, it is unsurprising that the pediatric nurse practitioner program is the second best in the United States. For students who want to attend Yale University, tuition and fees regularly cost more than $32,000 each year.

As the Allies faced off against the Axis powers in World War II, the United States eventually put its full might into the fight. If victory was to be assured, it was clear that both men and women had to play their parts. Many occupations were open to women who wished to take part in the war effort, and few roles were more important than those played by nurses as they cared for those injured by the brutality of war. In light of this, we’ve taken the temperature of 10 vintage nursing recruitment posters and can conclude that they offer a perfect glimpse into the attitudes and artwork of the time.

10. More Nurses Are Needed

This powerful image shows the toll that working as a nurse can take, with the subject of the photograph holding her hand to her forehead in exhaustion. Dressed in army fatigues, she holds out her other hand as if barely able to lift it. The message is clear, backed up by the bold, italicized text that tells us that more nurses are needed. For those left at home, the message that ‘all women can help’ could have inspired them to volunteer and do their bit. All in all, the Army Nurse Corp benefited from the service of just under 60,000 nurses during the course of WWII.

9. Cadet Nurse – The Girl With a Future

The Cadet Nurse Corps was first set up in 1943 to guarantee that the US had an adequate supply of nurses. The military’s needs led to nurses being siphoned away from the home front, and it was clear that more nurse training was required. A Cadet Nurse would receive free training, uniforms and even an allowance. The Corps did not discriminate on racial grounds, with good health, a high-school diploma and an age of between 17 and 35 the only conditions required for eligibility. The poster shows cadets in both military and civilian uniform, indicating that work in both arenas might be required, while the text pushes the obvious advantages of free nursing training.

8. You Are Needed Now

Another of the images that brought tens of thousands of women into the Army Nurse Corps, this poster is simple and uncluttered. The message is delivered at the top, speaking directly to the reader, while at the bottom of the image the solution is made clear: ‘Join the Army Nurse Corps’. The image itself is inspiring, showing an Army Nurse in full uniform, with her makeup and red lipstick giving her – and the profession – a touch of glamor as she gazes into the distance. During the course of the war, Army Nurses like those recruited by this poster received more than 1,600 medals and other awards recognizing their valor and commitment.

7. Enlist in a Proud Profession

When enrolling as a cadet nurse, eligible candidates pledged their service for the duration of the war, agreeing to serve where they were needed – whether that be in a military or civilian capacity. As an added incentive, nursing schools that could deliver training in just two and a half years received additions funds. When the program was closed in 1948, 150,000 nursing graduates praised its effective delivery of training and knowledge. This poster shows a young woman, elegantly coiffed and proud in her appearance and her role. The poster portrays nursing as the important and valuable profession that it is, no doubt drawing in recruits with the glamor of the model, the potential for patriotism and the practical benefits of the training.

6. We Feel Good

Published in Life magazine in 1944, just a year after the establishment of the Cadet Nurse Corps, this poster seems to be aimed more at parents than the potential Cadet Nurses themselves. This proud mom and dad are delighted with their daughter’s choice. Indeed, a full third of the text is given over to their positive feelings about her decision! The rest of the text goes into detail about what a Cadet Nurse can expect, from a monthly allowance of up to $30 to swish free uniforms. There is even the opportunity for dates! How could any parent have misgivings?

5. A Lifetime Education Free

As the Cadet Nurse Corps was open to high school graduates aged 17 and up, attracting young school leavers was an important area of recruitment. This poster shows a significant contrast between the confident Cadet Nurse of the foreground and the girls behind her. As the civilian girls are carrying their schoolbooks, we see that the Cadet Nurse has certainly grabbed their attention. Could they serve as Cadet Nurses too when they finished their studies? Only if they keep their grades up!

4. Join the Navy Nurse Corps

The Army wasn’t the only military arena where nurses served during WW2. The Navy Nurse Corps was first established in 1908. In 1941 it boasted a complement of around 800 nurses, but by the time the war ended there were almost 1,800 nurses serving in active duty with the Navy, as well as over 9,000 reserve members. This recruitment poster, one of many that played a part in boosting those numbers, takes a rather more fancy-free attitude than the others, with a smiling blonde in uniform jauntily marching towards the viewer, arms swinging.

3. Wanted: More Navy Nurses

Taking the opposite tack, this Navy recruiting poster is far more somber. The nurse’s eyes are steely – almost sad – as she stares off into the middle distance against the backdrop of a hospital ship. Rather than directing potential nurses to a recruiting station, this poster advises that they write to the Surgeon General for information about becoming a commissioned officer. That signature 1940s red lipstick and perfectly arranged hair makes yet another appearance.

2. Fighting Men Need Nurses

One of the most chilling entries in this collection, this poster doesn’t shy away from the reality of nursing duties during wartime. Holding up an injured soldier’s head, this nurse, clad in white, has an almost angelic quality, spotless against the battlefield and barbed wire. The Red Cross recruited tens of thousands of nurses for the US military during World War II, and this poster makes no distinction between Navy and Army nurses. Towards the end of 1943, the Army command told the Red Cross to stop recruiting, but in the spring of 1944 they realized that their complement of nurses was 10,000 short of what was required. The word went back to the Red Cross – ‘Fighting Men Need Nurses’, and recruitment was very much back in force. Indeed, a bill was almost passed that would have simply drafted nurses as needed.

1. Serve your Country in the War Job With a Future

This entry almost seems more like a fashion advertisement than a recruiting poster – it would likely have fit in rather well with the other ads in Life magazine when it was printed there in 1944. The Cadet Nurse Corps was just one year old at this point, and this advertisement seems to once again push the future opportunities that enlistment could bring. The vast majority of Cadet Nurses were assigned to non-federal hospitals, with just 1% working in Naval hospitals and 5.4% working in Army hospitals. This should not lead you to underestimate the importance of the Cadet Nurse Corps – with over 100,000 Cadet Nurses assigned to the home front, experienced nurses could be sent where they were most needed. By October 1945, enrollment in the Cadet Nurse Corps was closed, and the last Cadets graduated in 1948 to move on with their careers in, as the posters make clear, ‘a job with a future’.

There are many different careers that someone with a degree in a nursing field can pursue. One such career is a career as a travel nurse.

What is a Travel Nurse?

A travel nurse is, as the name suggests, someone who travels to different locations to help fill a nursing shortage in a specific area. These positions are usually temporary, but can last as long as a year.

A travel nurse is usually an independent contractor. While certain parts of your travel might be covered, you will be responsible for your own insurance, taxes and so on.

Travel Nurse Qualifications

Anyone who meets the qualifications for an open position can be a travel nurse. It’s important to note, however, that most staffing agencies want someone with at least one year experience. In addition, many positions are specific to certain fields, such as a perinatal nurse, neonatal nurse, infectious disease nurse, geriatric nurse and so on.

Travel Nurse Education

In order to be a travel nurse, you will have to be licensed as a nurse, or have a degree from an accredited health care program or college. Most agencies that hire travel nurses require your certification or degree to be based in the United States.

In addition, getting your education in a state that is part of the NLCA (Nurse Licensure Compact) will reduce the amount of new training you have to take when you travel to other states. This is because every state has their own licensing requirements for nurses, but the states that are part of the NLCA all have the same nursing requirements, which means that nurses in these states have a multi state license.

If you’re aren’t a licensed nurse already, your education can take between two and four years to complete. There are community colleges and technical colleges that offer 2 year programs. Some college will provide a nursing program that doesn’t require students to take some of the basic college courses, which allows them to complete their degree program in 3 years.

Why Travel Nursing?

There are several reasons why someone might choose to be a travel nurse. One reason is that in some areas where there is no shortage of nurses, a nurse may find it difficult to find work in his or her state. This can lead the nurse to become a travel nurse.

A more common reason for becoming a travel nurse is some people simply loves the diversity they experience when they accept travel nursing jobs. This is an excellent opportunity to see a lot of the United States while getting paid to do it.

Lastly, in many cases, a travel nurse gets paid more than he or she would if they stayed in their current location. Because travel nurses are placed where there are a lot of shortages, hospitals, clinics and so on, these places are willing to pay a lot more than a hospital that has plenty of staffing.

Becoming a Travel Nurse

To become a travel nurse, you’re going to have to join a staffing company. As an independent contractor, you may find it beneficial to join more than one staffing company, but the choice is yours.

Every company has their own pay scale as well as benefits they provide to the nurses that they recruit. Some of the benefits may be a per diem for travel as well as for rent. Some places will actually find a place for you to live and pay for it themselves; all you have to do is unpack your suitcase.

You will want to compare the pay for your field of nursing as well as your experience level between many different companies. Don’t sell yourself short. The more skills you have the more value you will be to a nurse staffing company. Make sure that you talk to a representative of each company about how much they will pay and what other benefits they provide.

There are some companies that will find you nursing jobs by doing the legwork for you – they contact several different staffing companies and provide them with your information on your behalf. Just be aware that they aren’t providing any information or services that you can’t do or get on your own and you will probably get paid slightly less so that they can receive a commission for recruiting you.

If a staffing company likes your application, then they will schedule an interview with you. You will then have to provide proof of your nursing experience, your diploma as well as your nursing license to any staffing company that you interview with.

The more flexible that you are about where you travel and how often you travel, the more likely it is that you will find work quickly. This, however, doesn’t mean that you have to go anywhere. You can stipulate your preferences and refuse to work anywhere other than those preferences, but this may mean it will take time for you to find work.

Travel Nurse Staffing Companies

As you can imagine, there are a number of staffing companies that recruit travel nurses (about 350). Most actually specialize in medical care employees, although others may be a division of a larger staffing company that helps businesses of all kinds.

Some companies that you can consider include:

American Mobile Healthcare

Medical Express

NursesRx

NurseChoice

AMN Healthcare

Yuma Regional Medical Travel Nursing

Quest Group

Aureus Medical Group

Travel Nursing Websites

Websites like Healthcare Traveler offers a great guide to help you find a good staffing company. On their site you can select the companies that you’re interested in and then fill out a single form that will be sent to all of the companies. This can help you to streamline the initial application process and help you find the right staffing company.

You can also visit Travel Nursing Blogs, which offers a series of blogs addressing some of the more commonly asked questions and offers you the opportunity to submit your own questions for an expert to answer. There are also tips for those of you who are new to travel nursing to help you acclimate, avoid common mistakes and more. This is a comprehensive site with a number of different areas that you’ll want to visit.

Quite a few nursing forums also include travel nurse sections. If you are already a member of a nursing forum, check and see if there is a traveling nurse section of which you can take advantage.

Travel Nursing Locations

Travel nurses go anywhere in the United States and some even work overseas if they’re assigned to a traveling client. Mostly, however, you can expect to go to the areas where the biggest shortages are.

According the the U.S. Department of Health, the United States, as a whole, will be short by nearly half a million nurses by the year 2015. By 2020 the shortage is expected to reach the one million mark.

Alaska is the state with the biggest nurse shortage in the U.S. Hawaii and Connecticut rank the number two and three spots for the states with the most need for nurses. California has nearly 50,000 vacancies for nurses, and that number is expected to grow.

Does this mean that you’re going to get a travel nursing job in Hawaii, Connecticut or California? It’s difficult to say. Budget cuts are part of the reason that there are shortages in some areas. As such, it will really depend on the hospitals and clinics that are actually hiring and whether or not they’re getting qualified nurses applying for those positions.

Travel Nurse Salary

How much money you can make as a travel nurse can vary. It depends on the staffing company that you choose and the location in which you are sent. In addition, if you have more experience, you’ll make more than if you’ve only been nursing for a years time.

According to Simply Hired, the national average salary for a travel nurse is $55,000 a year. This, however, includes information from every state, including those that don’t pay much for travel nurses because they don’t need them.

Another thing you have to consider is that typically living expenses are included in your contract when you travel. This means that you won’t be paying rent, utilities and possibly travel to and from work. They may even be a per diem for food, depending on the contract you sign.

Some travel nurses claim to make around $72 an hour while others make a claim of around $40 an hour. Again, how experienced you are and how much in demand your specialty is will have an impact on what you get paid.

What To Think About Before Taking The Travel Nursing Plunge

Being a travel nurse can be an exciting career. There are, however, a number of things to consider prior to making this decision. Things to think about include:

1) Family – If you’re married and/or have kids, being a travel nurse can take you away from them for an extended period of time. If they travel with you, you’re constantly moving them to new places, taking them away from friends, work, etc.

2) Taxes – As a contractor, you’re responsible for your taxes. It’s important to get this right or else you could face fines.

3) Training – For some it can be galling to be told that training is necessary before a new job can be started. If this sounds like you, then you may be unhappy with this career.

4) Advancement – In a clinical setting you are recognized for your work and moved up to different positions as a result. This rarely happens in a travel nurse setting.

5) Growth – In a clinical setting you have the opportunity to learn other skills and gain more experience in specialty areas. As a travel nurse, you can only do the work that you’re already qualified to do.

The United States is experiencing an escalating nursing shortage. In the past nine years, the number of registered nurses (RNs) has rose, however it is not sufficient enough to meet the healthcare demands of an ever-increasing population. This is especially true of the baby boomer population, which is expected to rise nearly three times higher than the overall population. The enrollment of students in nursing universities and colleges in the United States have increased, but not nearly enough to cover the need. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is taking into consideration the nursing shortage and securing the assistance of policy makers, schools and corresponding organizations to try to churn out an increased number of nurses. In the United States, there are a few states where the nursing shortage is much worse compared to other states.

1. California

In the state of California, there is a staggering amount of nurse-related jobs available. There is an estimated dire need of over 290,000 RN, 64,000 Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and 83,000 CNAs. Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, addressed the dire nursing shortage in 2005 by announcing the California Nurse Education Initiative. The Initiative provides $90 million over a five-year period via a public-private partnership to help decrease the nursing shortage.

2. Florida

With over three million residents 65 and older, Florida has the highest baby boomer population in the United States. According to a report by Florida Center for Nursing, Florida’s nursing shortage is caused by the rising number of an aging population of baby boomers and the new requirements needed to enter a nursing school. By 2025, there will be a need for over 50,000 nurses in Florida.

3. New York

The battle for state funding of nursing degree programs and continued education rages on in New York. The nursing shortage has affected the healthcare of New York residents for over 20 years. The state has raised salaries and offered more benefits to attract more people to the nursing industry, however with the rapidly increasing baby boomer generation, it is becoming harder to keep up with demands. New York has established a task force to assist in reducing the nursing shortage. Estimated statistics show there is a need for over 196,000 RNs, 55,000 LPNs, and over 112,000 CNAs.

4. Ohio

Reports from Ohio hospitals show there are numerous nurse-related job vacancies, especially in the RN field. The average age of Ohio nurses are 47 years old, and 40 percent of them will retire in about 10 years, leaving a hole in the nursing industry. Ohio hospitals have united with Ohio community colleges and universities to develop nursing degree programs that will appeal to students. Moreover, many employers have boosted tuition reimbursement, salaries and incentives to retain and attract nurses.

5. Pennsylvania

The nursing shortage in Pennsylvania is similar to the national problem. In 2004, the Governor developed the Pennsylvania Center for Health Careers to help alleviate the shortage by finding qualified applicants to fill the over 17,000 nurse-related positions. In addition, Pennsylvania hospitals are doing their part to reduce the shortage by attracting and retaining more nurses approaches, such as flexible schedules, an opportunity to make decisions about their work environment, tuition reimbursement and payment for continued education.

6. Texas

The state of Texas is also affected by the national nursing shortage. The Texas Legislature developed the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies as a response to the shortage, however the state cut funding for nursing education in 2011, increasing the nursing shortage. There is a dire need for over 22,000 full-time nurses, and this amount will increase to 70,000 by 2020 if not handled properly.

7. Illinois

Illinois has over 100 nursing schools offering various nurse-related programs. In an effort to reduce its nursing shortage, the state of Illinois offers nurses one of the highest hourly wages, student loan forgiveness programs, and a chance to choose their work environment.

8. New Jersey

In the state of New Jersey, over half of the RNs are between the ages of 46 to 50 and working over 10 hours a day. These nurses will be nearing retirement in a decade, causing New Jersey’s nursing shortage to worsen. New Jersey has a $22 million Initiative to help reverse its nursing shortage. The Initiative is used for creating new curricula for advanced nursing degree programs, developing new concepts to attract and retain nursing faculty, assisting students in finding available programs, and to maintain an insightful website filled with nursing resources.

9. Michigan

Michigan is being creative with its approaches to reducing its nursing shortage. Lawmakers are deliberating whether to allow community colleges to offer four-year bachelor’s degrees in nursing along with programs in other nurse-related fields.

10. Massachusetts

The State Senator of Massachusetts, Richard T. Moore introduced a bill as a response to the nursing shortage in 2005. The bill was created to increase the number of nurses, improve the tracking and distribution of the patient results and decrease nurse workloads.
